Getting Smacked by a 2x4 and How I Learned to Ask for Help, a Guest Blog

The other day, I woke up and I felt like I was slapped in the face with a 2 x 4 of reality, as I like to say. I had been sinking into a depressive state since the holidays and it finally got to the point where I was seriously considering seeking therapy. It seemed as if my whole world was falling down – I wasn’t having the professional success I was used to, I was feeling the burden of paying for a home all by myself, while in the meantime, wanting to make things so perfect for my fiancé and take care of everything, I was feeling totally overwhelmed.

My theoretical 2x4...

My fiancé and I are two different people when it comes to education. I have a Master’s Degree while he is still struggling to finish his B.A. almost a decade later. I kept nagging him to go to school, that school was important and I finally got fed up with he didn’t enroll in classes this past semester and didn’t even tell me why. I remember saying to him, “I don’t want to have the power, I want to be part of a power couple,” and telling my friends, “I hate that people may say, ‘Oh, look at her, she is so driven and he is just dragging her down.’” I’ve always been very proud of my professional success as well (something I will get to in a minute) and he has been at the same mediocre job (OK, the job isn’t mediocre, the pay is) for ten years. It wasn’t until reflecting on what one of my friends said to me when I brought up the driven comment that I realized I was measuring him by his professional success – NOT his personal success. There are so many good qualities to him that I was overlooking including the huge fact that he loved me EVEN when I was nagging him and bothering him and making him feel horrible about himself. I had to learn that not everyone – including my fiancé – is like me. It bothers me a lot when people aren’t driven to do something with their lives and I want to kind of shake them and be like “UM, HELLO, You can’t just sit back you have to DO SOMETHING to get the things you want!” But I had to realize that I need to be accepting of people for who they are and what they are. Yes, I still want my fiancé to finish school – and he agreed that he wants to – but I have to let him take his time and do it on his own. Not everyone can do fifteen things at once (I’m not bragging that I can – it’s just how I operate) and some people can only do one. I have to learn not to force them to do more just because I want to or I have.

Wisdom from The Beatles

Another thing I had to learn was to ask for help. I was taking on way too much. It was like I was just treading ocean water and I was ignoring the fact that someone was throwing me a life float. I had to ask my fiancé to chip in more. I had to ask him to front some money for a large purchase. And you know what? He did it and didn’t complain. I had just never asked before. I talked to him about making things easier for me and making dinner from now on, since I had such long hours. Not only does he do dinner, but now he does the dishes and everything else to make sure that I have a relaxing night. Sometimes, I have a list of a million errands I need him to do and he does them and doesn’t complain. But instead of making things perfect for him, we have found a balance that makes me feel less stressed, which makes our home life that much better. That life float was right next to me the whole time, but I just needed to find the inner strength to reach out and grab it and accept that it wasn’t being a failure – sometimes we all can’t make it to the boat on time and need to be pulled.

Hang on!

Professionally, however, I am in a tough spot. I am disappointed and embarrassed that I am stuck in this situation and already looking to jump ship, but I have to. I am in a very unstable environment in every sense of the word and it’s just not a good fit for me and I can tell that only after a few months. I was letting the mood of the venue and the people in it affect my home life. I was coming home angry or on the verge of tears every night, I was having horrible anxiety attacks, I was withdrawing from my friends and I was picking fights with those closest to me because I was having horrible anxiety about going to work. However, I had to find things that made me unwind quickly and I also had to find the triggers that were making me anxious. Once I found those, then I was able to focus myself. I could figure out what about my day was making me unhappy. I also decided that from now on, I would not complain about my job to others. I would act as if I was always on a job interview and be diplomatic, but polite, when asked. By not complaining, it wouldn’t re-iterate the things that I just can’t live with and I would be able to leave them at work. I learned that I need to stop and pause before I do certain activities and take some deep, yoga breaths. I had to learn that I can’t listen to a certain type of music on my home time because it makes me angry, so I took them off my iPod. I had to learn to take my mind off of work on the commute home and play a game or something mindless – not harp on all the bad things that happened. And if I need a glass of wine or two in the process, so be it.

Sip.   Breathe.

I’m not too sure how this all happened to me in the span of what seems like an hour. My own internal wheels were probably constantly churning and then “BOOM” it really all hit me. I know that not everything in life is peaches and cream. I know that people die, that people hurt, that some things are truly terrible, I get it. And I’m not saying that mourning is bad – that’s healthy. I’m saying not allowing yourself the option to win – even if it feels like losing – is just cheating yourself. You need to find your triggers. You need to be able to notice the signs of your negative attitude and do something to block them. You have to learn that other people’s life choices shouldn’t be your issue – whether you are living with them, married to them, friends with them or just met them. And you always have to learn to ask for help when you need it. Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed. In fact, most times people are waiting for you to ask and are only eager and willing to jump in and help. Grab the life float. It’s OK.

Being a Publicist for the Night!

For the past two months, I have had the amazing opportunity to serve as a Publicist for Spiritual Guru and Published Author, Blanca Beyar, on her first Book Tour.

Blanca Beyar is an amazing vessel of love and light in my world and in the lives of countless others. You can read more about her work on Blanca's Website. Blanca has self-published seven books so far...

But, for her 8th book "Attributes of Mastery" she chose to do something different. She wanted to get her message out there and have her voice heard by the masses. She pitched her idea to different publishing houses. She held her vision and trusted the process of divine creation and purpose...

"Attributes of Mastery" was picked up by the publisher, Ayni Books! It was an amazing accomplishment and a joyous moment of validation of her vision. She was excited and inspired up until the Holidays...when reality hit, there were some events that occurred which required her loving focus and complete devotion. Her book promotion took a backseat for a month. A few weeks later, she reached out to a major bookstore on Staten Island. Unfortunately, this popular bookseller was not receptive to her pitch. Blanca felt disappointed and disenchanted. After a month of taking a hiatus from promoting the book to focus on her beloved students, she started to lose momentum in her marketing. She needed to be reignited. We spoke and I recognized she needed a jolt of energy. And I knew exactly where to get that....No, not a Starbucks (though that may have been involved in the creative process). I did what I best: I charged up her energetic battery. After an incredible brainstorming session, we knew exactly what we needed to do. We needed to think independently and support a local bookstore, one that was cozy, warm, loving, approachable, and a staple in the local community, not a big name who made us feel small.

We reached out to the owner of The BookMark Shoppe in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where I had previously attending an amazing book signing. We secured a pitch meeting with the owners and within 5 minutes of meeting, Blanca had her 1st Book signing on the calendar: Thursday, February 7th, 2013 at 7pm. Then, I began marketing... I reached out to YOU on YouTube, on my Facebook page,Twitter campaigns, and of course personally inviting friends and family!

In the meantime, I'd been checking in with The BookMark Shoppe.
The did an amazing job making sure to stock the shelves with "Attributes of Mastery"

...and the next step was to get NOTICED. What better way to excite readers than with a visual reminder as you walk down 3rd avenue?  Cue the signage....

After marketing 3 weeks ahead, 1 week ahead, 1 day ahead, and the day of... we decided to LET GO and ENJOY the night. Of course, I photographed the entire event because that's what I do.

Here are the juicy details and pictures galore:

Blanca shared an excerpt from her book, "Attributes of Mastery." She began by sharing her own experience learning the 1st Attribute of ACCEPTANCE, something she struggled with through a very traumatic part of her life and how she worked through her pain to embrace a new perspective of peace. The Q&A session proved to elicit many tears and heartfelt responses. Everyone could feel the energy in the room...it was electric!

As a sweet treat for the guests, one of Blanca's devoted students, Mary Provenzano, who is an amazing baker...her cookies literally taste like love on a plate. She donated homemade cookies, including chocolate chip (my favorite), double chocolate chip, and sugar cookies. Let me tell you, I personally appreciated the cookies since I skipped dinner (bad girl!!) to make it to the event in time. OF COURSE the 1st day of my new job was the same night of our big event....God works in mysterious ways. :)

As a gift for attending and purchasing a copy of "Attributes of Mastery", she presented each guest with their own unique, beautiful, and sacred healing crystal that she blessed.  Crystals, by the way, are powerful instruments for self-healing. They carry so much energy and are very receptive to whatever energies you are emitting. Plus, they can compliment your spiritual journey through the 21 Attributes.

Blanca and her new fan, Yasmine, who came all the way from the United Kingdom!
Yasmine is an amazing role model--she travels across the world as a motivational speaker about self-confidence.  Within minutes of meeting Yasmine, I knew we were destined to be friends.
P.S. I had no idea she was a fashion designer and founder of Trendy Couture!

One of Blanca's incredibly artistic students, Suzanne, was very excited to be sharing her birthday eve by getting her book autographed by her Guru!

Blanca shares a moment of bliss as she embraces her student of 13 years, Geraldine. Geraldine is a Holistic Nurse and Reiki Master and yep, she's my Mom.
Blanca & Myself
As I reflect back on the evening, I am still in awe of all the magical connections that were made at the BookMark Shoppe. I personally had a great experience from start to finish---I thoroughly enjoyed the process, the details, the planning, the exectuion. Life is a journey not a destination, this is a process not a product. I am reflecting here to stop and smell the roses. I connected with my Guru on a deeper level and helped support her mission of "getting out into the masses." I realize now that I am quite skilled at energizing people or as Blanca stated, "putting a fire under her butt" LOL. I've always loved to put my energy to good use...and what better way than to be of divine service.  I also must share that I kinda loved being a Publicist: networking in the local community and maintaining the momentum of the social marketing campaign. It was exciting!!! Along the way, I made very special new friends and colleagues.  I just want to share my deepest gratitude and excitement for my Guru and I'm so glad more people are getting to know her amazing Spirit. I'm looking forward to the next stop on your Book Tour
...where are we going next? New Jersey!

Oh hey... if you are into reality TV and you want to see Blanca doing tremendous healing...Don't miss this season of "Mob Wives" where she works with Love Majewski and Karen Gravano.

And on that note, I have one last thing to say...

I want you to honor who you are. In this moment, declare yourself.  I have always been so inspired by Blanca's authenticity. Every single day she reminds me to be my most authentic self. I am so inspired that I have developed a Confidence Series coming up in March...it will be a series of fun + engaging workshops at...you guessed it.. The BookMark Shoppe! More on this soon...

xo, love, light, health happiness,
Noel

Tell me more about Reiki Healing!

As I mentioned in my previous post: Keep Calm and Get Reiki I have opened up my own Private Practice in Energy Healing and Reiki, serving the local community in Staten Island, NY. I am honored to accompany my clients on their journey to self-discovery and enlightenment. My deepest desire is that all whom I serve embody their fullest potential for love and light. If you are interested in Reiki Healing, I invite you to connect with me through my website: www.SheLivesInspired.com

If you aren't familiar with Reiki, I'd love to give you a brief introduction to this wonderful form of energy healing.

The word Reiki is made of 2 Japanese words:
Rei = "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" +  Ki = "life force energy"
Reiki = "spiritually guided life force energy."
Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us. If one's "life force energy" is LOW, then we are more likely to get sick, feel anxious and stressed. However, if one's "life force energy" is HIGH, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including your physical body, your emotions, your mind and your spirit-- creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.  It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve illness side effects and promote recovery. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.  The practice of Reiki was developed to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it.
